Blessed Chiara Luce Badano
Chiara Luce Badano was an Italian teenager whose joy and courage made a lasting impact on people around the world. Born in 1971, she grew up like many young people today—she loved sports, music, and spending time with friends. At nine, she joined the Focolare Movement, where her bright personality earned her the nickname “Luce,” meaning light.

At sixteen, Chiara was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive bone cancer. Even as the illness progressed, she refused to let fear or bitterness define her. She stayed connected to her friends, encouraged others, and faced every challenge with a calm strength rooted in her faith. Her ability to stay hopeful and loving—even in the hardest moments—became her signature.
Chiara died in 1990 at just eighteen years old, but her story continues to inspire young people who want to live with purpose, authenticity, and compassion. She was beatified in 2010, recognized for the way she transformed suffering into a message of hope.
